Wave Alley (2014)
Wave Alley, 2014
In the spring and summer of 2014, I took a series of test shots of six surfers as they posed in lower Manhattan alleys.
Late each summer I spot New York City surfers carrying their boards onto the A train, heading out to the Rockaways. But the strange incongruity of tanned and blond beach-bums in the middle of this deeply urban grit and noise never really hit home until I stumbled across a surf shop in the last place I expected: a narrow, cobblestoned back street tucked away in lower Manhattan, just a few blocks from the Bowery and the former CBGB. I decided I had to find a way to depict that jarring mashup of the deeply urban and the sun-drenched. —2014
